The derailment of a commuter train in the Bronx last year that killed four people highlighted the dangers of sleep apnea.
Dr. Ivan Stein, director of the New Jersey Snoring Solutions in West Orange, noted a National Transportation Safety Board report released last week states the engineer, who claimed to be "dazed" prior to the accident, suffered from "severe obstructive sleep apnea," which can make a person chronically sleepy,
"With sleep apnea," Stein told The Item, "you fall asleep, you stop breathing and your body is struggling to keep breathing..."
